Feeling lost during your self-isolation?? This will help!

Does this sound familiar to you?

You get up and get ready for work, eat a piece of burnt toast on your drive in because you slept in past your alarm, are now running late and don’t have time to make another. You stop at your local café on your way, but today you need an extra shot in your coffee because you also didn’t sleep last night and already feel like you’ve been hit in the head with a bat. Damn. It is only Tuesday. You check your email whilst you wait for your coffee – 82 emails. F*ck. You only checked it 12 hours ago! What. The. Actual. F**k.

 

You long for the weekend. Not even for the weekend. You just long for a day even where you could just sit and do nothing. Really Netflix and Chill. Sleep in. Sleep without an alarm. Oh, what an amazing life that would be. Then you start to think about all the things you would do if only you had the time and space to do it.

 

You’d meditate. You’d do yoga in the mornings. You’d cook more. You’d even bake. You’d blow the dust off that sewing kit and get back into a hobby you used to love. You’d read more books and of course you’d be super fit and healthy – the jeans that are currently digging into your sides would be positively loose! If only you had the time.

 

Your coffee is now ready and you snap back into reality, get in your car and drive to work.  That was a nice daydream though, wasn’t it?

Well… here is the punch you right in your face reality.
This isn’t a daydream anymore. Right now, this could be your reality.

 

Am I discounting that the reason we are here is because of a horrendous global crisis that is seeing thousands of people losing their lives and even more losing their jobs? Fuck no. It is absolutely heartbreaking and I hope it is over sooner rather than later. Do I believe that we also need to cut ourselves slack during this time to feel whatever we need to feel in any given moment and not feel pressured to behave a certain way or have all of our sh*t together? HELL YES.

 

But, I also believe the current reality for a lot of people is that probably for the first time in a long time, you do have the time and the space to reignite some of your hobbies and your passions, even share them with your children , or your partner if you have them. Or, if you don’t think you have any, you now have the time to do some soul searching and find out what really lights you up, or what skillset the world needs that you can bring.

 

You now have the time. To breathe. To think. To move. To make the most of this time (as sucky as it is) and learn something new about yourself.

 

Here are some ideas to get your started!

 

  • Learn more about yourself – NOW is a great time to reflect on your strengths, weaknesses and areas of opportunity to help you continue to stretch yourself and grow. Not sure where to start? Try one or both of these FREE quizzes from VIA Strengths Finder or the 16 personalities Test. Understanding who you are, what you stand for and what you bring to the table is critical not only for your own self-confidence, but also so you can continue to work on yourself and be the best human being you can be. What do you have to loose by using this time to learn more about yourself and what you bring to the world?

 

  • Watch this powerful TED Talk on Identity! If you have ever needed some clarity over your identity and working out WHO you are outside of the job you do, or the roles you play in life – e.g mum, sister, daughter etc – (remember, these things are WHAT you do, not who YOU are) – and what defines you (or doesn’t), this TED talk will help put all of that into perspective. Apart from that, it is also just an incredibly inspirational talk by a truly mesmerizing speaker – Best 13 minutes you could spend (and I totally know that you have 13 minutes available to you right now!) What defines YOU – Lizzie Velasquez TED Talk 

 

  • Journal – When you do have days where your anxiety and stress maybe higher than usual, write it down. Capture your feelings and lean into them. Suppressing them, or trying to hide them will not serve you in the long run. You have every right to feel every and any emotion you need to right now. These are unprecedented times. Help yourself distil some of the mental clutter though by writing it down.

 

  • Make a list of all the things you’ve been curious to learn or do, but claim to have never had time to – It might be the books you’ve always wanted to read, the movies or documentaries you’ve always wanted to watch, the food you have always wanted to learn to cook, the vegetable garden you’ve always wanted to plant, or the instrument you’ve wanted to learn to play. Write all of these things down, put a plan in place for each of them on what you would need to do to learn to do it, and then schedule some time to do so.

 

  • Now, take this challenge! If you are currently feeling in a bit of a funk, maybe it is time to get yourself out of your comfort zone, consciously! Try some of the new hobbies you just listed above, eat food you’ve never tried, speak to people you don’t know (virtually)! Watch this ted Talk for some extra motivation and challenge yourself – “Try something new for the next 30 days – Matt Cutts (4mins”)

 

  • Make your goals visible! Use this time to reflect on where you are right now and where you want to be. Now, MAKE THEM VISIBLE! The key to sticking to your goals is having them visible each day as a reminder – literally staring you in the face! Whether this is through a vision board that you continue to update (it should be a live piece of work, not something static that never gets refreshed), or you program your phone to remind you of your goals each day, whatever works for you – just make it visible and something you continue to be reminded of.  Why not use this time to make something bright, eye catching and motivating using old magazines, brochures, newspapers etc?

 

  • Call or FaceTime someone you haven’t spoken to for a while – Just because we are largely house-bound right now doesn’t mean we can’t still connect with people we love. You’ll feel instantly more motivated and positive after speaking to someone and as though you aren’t alone in this.   • Create some structure for your days going forward – The key to success in maintaining direction during tough times is having something clear you are aiming for. Each day. This means having clear priorities and goals to achieve, no matter how big or small. Yes, even with your hobbies. Decide the night before what you are going to do the next day so that you have some structure in your day.   • Start NOW and keep going! Sometimes we build things up in our heads to be so big that we then don’t know where to start (I can’t be the only one who does this, right?) – so then we don’t start! The way to keep momentum and to keep inspired is to just keep going. Keep taking small steps and celebrate the wins along the way.

I hope you are keeping safe and healthy during this crazy time of self-isolation!

 

For a lot of us now, we probably can’t remember a time where we weren’t talking about Coronavirus……but gosh do we long for that day again! I know I do.

 

I am currently writing to you floating in the middle of the Caribbean ocean where we are currently on a yacht with my brother and sister in law. We are laying pretty low, self-isolating (our nearest boat neighbour currently is about 70 metres away!) and following all the regulations in place here.  And ultimately, we are just trying to stay as positive as we can about the state of the world currently.

 

The way I see it we only have two choices at an individual level about how we respond mentally to the current situation and our lockdown into self-isolation – we let all of the negativity of the current circumstances eat us up. We let the oversupply of (often inaccurate) information online overwhelm us and induce greater stress and anxiety. We wallow in the plans we had for 2020 that perhaps haven’t quite come to fruition the way we’d hoped and dreamt they would, and we throw ourselves a pity party.

 

Or, we reframe. We look for the positives and remind ourselves of the how lucky we currently are – AND believe it or not, there are some reasons to be positive. We are healthy and alive. And I hope with every part of me that if you are reading this right now that you are healthy. I also hope that if you are reading this right now that you are reading it from home and following the request of our governments, and respecting our doctors and nurses who are on the frontline fighting this illness out and you are self-isolating at home.

 

I choose to stay glass half full right now. I have made a choice. And this requires daily mental maintenance.  I choose to look at the time and space I currently have as an opportunity (and when I say space, I do mean 42 feet of floating space that I share with 4 people – LOL!).  But nonetheless, an opportunity to do things that I am very sure I would have previously claimed to never have time for.

 

So, use this time. It is unlikely you’ll get it again.

 

Learn a new skill. Read those books collecting dust on your shelves.

Reflect on where you are and where you want to be and put a plan in place on how you can take this life by the balls once you are free to leave your house again!

Pay it forward and offer your skillset to someone in need.

But, most important of all….. accept the current reality and let it go… (if it helps to sing this to the tune of FROZEN then yes, absolutely do so!). I’m not saying the current reality is great. It sucks. Really fucking sucks.  But it is where we are right now. That part we don’t have control over. How we respond individually though is something we do have control over.

I for one have been reading more than I ever have before.

I have learnt to bake bread from scratch – and people ACTUALLY ATE IT!

I am learning to sail.

I am writing more content than ever and strategizing a plan of attack for when we get through this storm. And we WILL get through it.

I am learning how to navigate Youtube as a contributor.

I am honing my skillset even further to continue to add value to people when the world can come together again.

 

You do currently have choices even though it may feel like you do not. You just have to believe that you do and then motivate yourself to take action (from your living room!).

 

One thing I have found that has helped me immensely during these ambiguous times though is keeping some structure in my day. Keeping a list of things to do. Prioritising them. Making a plan for the following day of what I will do and when. I have seen a few people saying they are struggling to keep structure in their day and prioritise now that they are working from home. Or, even if you are not working currently, then staying motivated and avoiding finding yourself on the couch with Netflix and a bag of popcorn all day, every day (obviously we all get to treat ourselves to these days sometimes though!).

Have you had BIG plans cancelled in 2020? This post is for you!

You get to your desk, plug your laptop in that you took home the night before to catch up on the emails you’d missed throughout the previous day. Ding. Ding. Ding. As your laptop reloads the emails that have come in overnight the “ding” noise just reminds you that you’re right back where you left yesterday – needing to reply to more emails.

 

Your phone rings. It’s someone wanting to check that you received their email…. that they just sent (face palm). Whilst you’re on the phone you get a text from someone else asking if you’ve got 5 minutes to catch up today – you know 5 mins is never 5 mins.

 

It’s only 8.15am.

 

You start working through your emails and start responding to a few (which you also feel guilty about because you said you  were going to focus on bigger ticket things this morning than just email backlog). Someone arrives at your desk with a question.  Another person arrives for the day and is keen to talk about their weekend. By now its nearly 9am and you have a meeting. Still with your half-written email responses sitting in draft.

 

Does this feel familiar to some of you? Yep, I bet it does. Your day, your time and your inbox are being ruled by other people’s agendas. Not your own. This was absolutely me, and still I have days exactly like the above [Full disclosure – As I click publish on this blog post, I feel like I have just had a week of this feeling]. But, I have learnt some strategies to manage my days better and to make better use of my time so that I am achieving the things that I need to do as well as enabling others to do the same.

 

Feel like you’re a slave to your inbox, phone, or the endless meetings in your diary that mean you never really feel like you get anything done?

 

Try implementing some of the below and I guarantee you that if you stick to them you’ll notice a marked shift in the productivity of your day.  You’ll also enjoy the self empowering feeling like you are the one in control of your own day and your own time.

 

1)Turn off your email notifications – yep, you know exactly what I’m talking about! That little f*cker that appears at the bottom of your screen just to remind you that you have a truck load of emails waiting to be read. In addition to this, you might also have the “ding” that is like a little paper-cut to your soul every time it goes off interrupting what you were doing and just slowly chipping away at your concentration as you wonder what that “ding” might mean. So, you check it – of course. “It could be important” you convince yourself.   It wasn’t important.  So, then you go back to what you were doing previously. The ding” happens again. You stop what you were doing and check your inbox again. And the cycle continues.  Moral of the story peeps – turn off the email notifications – they are draining your concentration and distracting you. Instead, try to just check your inbox a couple of times a day (I hope you didn’t just fall off your chair as you read that!) to maximise your time and productivity.

 

2)Follow the 4 D’s of email to save yourself wasting your own time – This one is great and has absolutely changed by approach to emails. The 4 Ds of emails basically dictate that any email that enters your inbox, you should be able to decide the first time you read it what you are going to do with it. Why? To save it just sitting in your inbox waiting for the right time for you to do something about it. Does this sound familiar to you….. You read an email and decide you can’t do anything with it right now, so you mark it as unread again to remind yourself to come back to it. You then revisit it again, decide now is not the time either, so you re-highlight it again. How many times do you do this and how much time do you waste? Imagine if you had  just read it once and then made a decision on what best to do? The Four D’s are as follows:

  1. Do it (now) – this assumes it is a 3-minute job that you can do then and there and get it off your list.
  2. Delete it – if it is junk mail, or an FYI for you with no action needed (maybe you’ll file it instead of delete), or any other number or emails you get in your day that serve absolutely no f*cking value or purpose to your day – DELETE them.
  3. Delegate it – Not a task that you need to be doing? Then delegate it. Who can assist you with the task? Request their assistance with clear timeframes of when you need something completed by and/or what the next steps are.
  4. Diarise/Defer It – refer to the example I gave above about a task clearly too big to be done in the moment, but instead of diarising time, the email just sat in the inbox continuing to be read and re-read some more with no clear time put aside to focus on it. “Diarise it” means a task will take longer than 3-5 minutes and will need your undivided attention. Decide when you can do this task and then put time in your diary for when that will happen and STICK to it.

 

3)Block out time for certain tasks that you know need your attention – Further to the above – You NEED to block out time for things that need your attention and then you need to stick to them. Blocked out time for critical tasks should be treated in the same way you would if that time slot was a meeting with another person. You wouldn’t just stand them up – so don’t stand yourself up or treat that time as flex-time that people can book over the top of. Note: This concept should also be considered for non-work-related activities – e.g block out time for the gym, for lunch, for social activities.

 

4)Remove yourself when you need to concentrate and don’t feel guilty about it.  If there is a task that you really need to concentrate on and you can’t in your standard environment – e.g open plan offices, co-working spaces etc, then remove yourself for the duration of the task. If you are someone who needs to focus in the quiet, then do that. If you are someone who just needs to put on some headphones and cut yourself off from the noise to concentrate, then do that and do it without guilt. You’ll feel much better after completing the task than what you would trying to complete it with constant distractions. The quality of your work will thank you too.

 

A lot of these tips may be things you have heard before – they are no secret and have been popularised in numerous productivity books, podcasts etc.
